Natural Cosmetics Keep Your Skin Healthy

Most women enjoy wearing various types of cosmetics to enhance their appearance. Many of the different types of cosmetics on the market contain chemicals that can be harsh for your face when you use them on a regular basis. Since different women have different types of skin these cosmetics can cause the skin to dry, to become oily, and even for the skin to break out if it is sensitive.

To help your skin remain healthy you should consider using natural cosmetics. To be classified as a natural cosmetic the product can't contain artificial colors or preservatives, pesticides or herbicides, solvents, mineral oil, synthetic chemicals, or be tested on animals. All of the herbs and agricultural products used in natural cosmetics have to be organic in nature. In order for a natural cosmetic to be classified as so 95% of the ingredients have to be found on an approved list. The other 5% can be water and salt which do not have to be organic.

Cosmetics

Many manufacturers are working hard to provide natural cosmetics to meet the demands of consumers. Some of them make only natural cosmetics and others offer the consumer the choice of which one they are interested in. With many animals rights activists encouraging consumers to boycott products that are tested on animals most manufacturers have started implementing other testing procedures.

If you are not sure if some of the cosmetics you use are natural or not you can contact the manufacturer. Take not of who that is and the codes on the product you own or you are planning to purchase. Almost all cosmetics are marketed without the ingredients being on the product so you will have to do this research on your own.

Another reason why you should find out what ingredients are in any given natural cosmetic is that some of them can cause a skin irritation or allergic reaction for some individuals. If you experience such instances when using natural cosmetics you will need to identify the ingredient responsible for it. Common ones people experience trouble with include clover blossom and almond extract.

You will have not trouble finding natural cosmetics at most retail stores or online. Make sure you purchase them from a reputable location though and that they are 100% all natural. You will pay slightly more for natural cosmetics than traditional ones but the additional price is well worth the preservation for your face. Now you can have healthy skin and still wear the various cosmetics you enjoy.

What Does Organic Mean? A Look At The Origins And Organic Cosmetics Today

Organ-ic, the literal meanings.

Organic means literally organ, from organized living beings and it derives from the latin word arganon, musical instrument. In 1942 it acquired the meaning free from pesticides and fertilizers, being referred to crops farmed according to organic standards. It is easy to understand the confusion about this term as it means related to nature as well as free from pesticides and fertilisers.

Cosmetics

The four principles behind the organic movement and its original spirit.

The organic farming movement which is at the origin of the whole organic trend we are living today has four important principles at its foundation: Health Ecology Fairness Care Source: IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement)

Organic beauty standards and organic cosmetics.

Organic farming has international standards internationally recognized and harmonised, but there is no official definition applicable to cosmetics and beauty products, as there is no unanimity on how to define them. That is why it is a little bit of a jungle out there with several certifying bodies interpreting organic cosmetics their own way and also brands using the organic claim. What is the difference? If no certification is present the organic claim could be referred to simply natural ingredients or to organic certified ingredients, where no specification is made about: -what percentage is present (it could be from a tiny bit up to 100%) -the nature of the other ingredients present. When an organic certification is present it means the product complies with some organic standards which: -guarantee the amount of organic ingredients (in the UK there are 2 systems: 70% plus and 95% plus) -regulate the non organic ingredients (such as preservatives, herbal extracts, and other cosmetic ingredients that are nature derived) The way the non organic ingredients are regulated differ from a certifying body to another, with some organizations stricter than others in the choice of non organic ingredients. As there are a few around, there are a few standards: Soil Association, Organic Food Federation, Organic Farmers and Growers, Ecocert, Cosmebio, Demeter or BDAA, AIAB, BFA, etc.

Organic cosmetics, strengths and challenges.

Organic certified cosmetics are developed aiming to provide products that are close to nature as much as possible, but how close can we get and at what price? Organic certified ingredients are much more expensive than ordinary ones and have stronger odour and colour. The organic certification for finished products also adds a cost, and it does not have a universal meaning. What then? My solution is Forest Secrets skin care, a range taking the best of the organic spirit without compromising on purity and performance. Forest Secrets products do not contain any of the preservatives you might find in organic cosmetics and it contains natural ingredients with fantastic anti ageing properties that are scientifically proven. You will not be able to find organic certified products with powerful antiaging claims as the organic standards do not allow that. Making Cosmetics - Starting Your Own Homemade Cosmetics Business is Easy & High Profit

Can you sell homemade cosmetics to the general public and retail outlets? This is one of the most common questions asked of me during my 25-plus years of making cosmetics. The answer, in almost all countries, is: Yes. There certainly seems to be a lot of confusion regarding this issue - fueled in part, I am sure, by the desire of the global conglomerates to keep control of this multi-billion dollar industry.

Many countries take their lead from the US FDA, so let's take a look at what the FDA has to say about the issue of making homemade cosmetics for retail sale. Homemade cosmetics are not required to be tested by the FDA - or any other authorities, for that matter. However, there are a few rules which must be observed.

Cosmetics

1. The cosmetic product must be correctly labelled, and follow the labeling regulations. Essentially, this means stating the ingredients in descending order of use, the quantity of product contained within the packaging and any known safety precautions.

2. The cosmetic product must not contain any prohibited ingredients. If you are using professional formulations for making cosmetics, this will not represent any problem.

3. The cosmetic product must be free of pathogens. Again, if you are using professional formulations, you will not have any difficulties complying with this regulation.

The benefits of making cosmetics which have been professionally formulated, is that you will be able to produce top quality products of a calibre equal to, or even better than, the leading cosmetic manufacturers. How can your homemade cosmetics be better than the leading brands?

While it's true that top quality cosmetic products usually include high grade, effective ingredients, cosmetic manufacturing companies operate on extremely high profit levels - 1000% or even much higher. Because the most effective ingredients are also the most expensive, in order to maximize their profits, leading cosmetic making companies usually use these substances in the lowest proportion possible.

Making your own homemade cosmetics allows you to use the same ingredients - but in much higher proportion. This means you can produce products of much higher quality and effectiveness. If you have your own business making cosmetics, you can make color cosmetics, skin and hair care, body and bath products, and toiletries, which will quickly develop a loyal clientele. And you will be able to make the same profits as the big cosmetic manufacturing companies.

You can even start a business making cosmetics for other retailers - hair and beauty salons, spas, etc - and package the products especially for them, with their own label. Private label manufacturing is becoming increasingly popular.

Making homemade cosmetics for retail sale is a high profit and easy business to operate, and there are many ways to sell the products and develop markets. Because the big conglomerates concentrate on the large, mainstream retailers, there are literally thousands of smaller, untapped, hungry markets - a few contracts to supply these outlets can easily bring you a six-figure income.

To summarize, the FDA does not review or approve cosmetic products or cosmetic ingredients before they are sold to the public. The agency acts only against cosmetic products found to cause harm after they have been released on the market.

If you are using untested recipes from your kitchen, this could present a problem if a customer suffered an allergy. Also, cosmetic products without preservatives can easily grow bacteria and molds, and cause skin reactions

In the US, you do not need approval from the FDA to start a business making cosmetics. In most other countries, this is also the case. If you are interested to join the high profit and prestigious world of making cosmetics, my best advice is to purchase top quality formulations and make them in accordance with the manufacturing directions. This way you can be sure they will be in compliance with FDA regulations.

The Benefits Of Wearing All Natural Cosmetics And Makeup

Thousands of cosmetic products are touted in every form of media imaginable. So how does a girl know which one to choose? With all of the chemicals and preservatives that are in today's cosmetics, more women are turning to the benefits of all natural makeup that doesn't contain these harmful ingredients. These natural cosmetics are a cut above the rest of the products on the market, containing no ingredients that can damage delicate skin; and most of the all natural makeup products are not tested on animals, either. Take a look below at just a few of the many reasons why you should consider switching to an all natural cosmetic line.

Less Breakouts

Cosmetics

One of the biggest benefits of switching to all natural makeup products is the fact that your skin will experience fewer breakouts. As every woman knows, that dreaded pimple that shows up at the most inopportune moments can be a terrible thing. With an all natural makeup line, this is no longer a problem. Many of the popular commercial cosmetic lines use oils as the base for their makeup products. With all natural cosmetics, the base is typically water-based, and many you mix yourself at home.

No Animal Testing

Throughout the last fifty years, cosmetics companies around the world have been boycotted by animal rights activists. Many of these types of companies test their products on lab animals, in order to make certain that their cosmetics do not cause harm to their human consumers. This is not a concern with companies that create all natural makeup products. Because there are no chemicals in natural cosmetics, and many are made from organic ingredients, there is no risk to women who wear the makeup; and thus no reason for animal testing.

Cost Effective

Due to the very nature of all natural makeup, the ingredients are much less expensive than those used in most commercial cosmetics. This savings is passed on to you, the consumer, by offering a much less expensive line of products. Not only are ready-made all natural makeup products cheaper to buy, if you go online and search for them, you can find the ingredients necessary to make your own.

As you can see, there are a great many reasons to switch to an all natural makeup line, instead of using the many chemical and oil-based products currently on the market. A quick search will provide you with any type of makeup product you need, and you'll never have to worry about that unwanted pimple ever again!

How to Choose More Environmentally Friendly Cosmetics

Only Frankenstein gets away with green face paint. But green makeup -- as in ecologically sustainable, earth-friendly beauty products -- is a popular new trend with lasting impact. It's a movement towards more ethical and eco-friendly products that beautify your face without damaging the environment. Of course, products that don't contain harsh chemicals or carcinogens are also better for you in the long run.

Unfortunately, life after L'Oreal can get a little complicated. With so many products labeled 'natural' or 'organic,' it's hard to know where to begin. Let's take a look at some of the labels you're likely to see, what they mean, and how you can use them to make greener decisions for both you and the Earth.

Cosmetics

Organic

Organic crops are produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or genetic modification. As the organic industry grows, fewer toxic chemicals are going into our water and air.  But beware products that claim to be organic: unless that claim is USDA Certified Organic, the glossy 'organic' lipstick you're tempted by could contain as few as one organic ingredient. The green and white USDA label guarantees that the ingredients (not including water, naturally) in your product are 95% or more organic. Other organic certifications such as EcoCert are less stringent in their qualifications.

One of the side benefits of buying certified organic products is that they do not contain 1,4 dioxane, a carcinogenic contaminant found in many foaming products, especially those with the ingredient sodium laureth sulfate.

Vegetarian / Vegan / Cruelty-free

For many people, being green also includes being kind to the other animals that share the planet with us. Vegetarian cosmetics may contain ingredients like beeswax, honey, or milk that were obtained without harming the animal; vegan cosmetics contain no animal products.

Cruelty-free products (look for the Leaping Bunny or PETA symbol) were developed without being tested on animals. A cruelty-free product can still contain animal products. Watch out for ingredients like stearic acid (usually derived from cow or sheep fat), oleyl alcohol (inedible beef fat), and carmine (red dye made from crushed beetles and frequently found in natural lipsticks as an alternative to chemical dyes).

Biodegradable / Recyclable / Minimal Packaging

When in doubt, go for the makeup with the most eco-friendly packaging -- recyclable, recycled, minimal, or biodegradable. Cargo Cosmetics pioneered a lipstick that is not only made with eco-friendly ingredients but also comes in a biodegradable corn-based tube. In most cases, the less packaging, the better.

Finally, here a few things to avoid on your next cosmetic shopping spree:

  1. Things you can't pronounce (Latin plant names aside). Synthetic chemicals tend to have long, complicated chemical-sounding names. Natural ingredients don't. In general, the shorter the ingredient list and the more things you recognize on it, the better. Many synthetic ingredients, including parabens (preservatives), sodium laureth/ lauryl sulfate (foaming agents), and phthalates (binders) range from mildly irritating to potentially carcinogenic.

  2. Petroleum / petrochemical ingredients. Not only are fossil fuels a non-renewable resource, they are ineffective moisturizers because they don't absorb into your skin. Choose a plant-based oil instead, such as jojoba, shea butter, or sunflower oil.

  3. The labels 'pure' and 'all-natural.' Unless the ingredients and a USDA organic tag back it up, these labels are not regulated and do not guarantee anything.

Anti Aging Skin Care: "Pharmaceutical" Cosmetics

Have you ever heard the new buzz term "cosmeceuticals"? This nifty term refers to the fusion of two areas, one which cultivates necessary medications which control our bodily processes internally, and the other, which manipulates our body from the outside, cosmetically improving our appearance.

You guessed it, the first is "pharmaceuticals" and the second is "cosmetics". The joining of these two fields, both extremely lucrative, and arguably necessary, is called "cosmeceuticals", and this exciting new breed is causing a stir in the beauty community lately.

Cosmetics

Although they have been united in this new genre of cosmetics, the two are very different when it comes to government and advisory board regulation. Pharmaceuticals, at least in the US currently, are heavily regulated by the organization known as the FDA, while cosmetics are not government regulated.

Why? Cosmetics are not regulated by any government agency because they are not considered a device that alters bodily chemistry of function internally in any way, nor are they advertised as substances that change the chemistry of the body.

Currently, cosmetics manufacturers are walking on eggshells to keep this paritcular pharmaceutical and cosmetic distinction in tact, as precious dollars could be lost if the new breed of cosmeceuticals were government regulated.

Even if a wrinkle cream currently marketed had the ability to actually "get rid of wrinkles", cosmetic marketers are very careful to still note that they only decrease or eliminate the "appearance" of aging and wrinkles, since this still technically is not pharmaceutical in nature.

Some of these new cosmeceuticals which feature high grade vitamins and various proteins and peptides actually do "get rid of wrinkles" and remove signs of aging though, although they still are careful to avoid this overzealous marketing for fear of FDA regulation.

Cosmetic companies specializing in anti aging have come up with everything from potent vitamin extracts, to skin tightening complexes with antioxidants, restructuring aids like peptides and other skin cell regenerators, and a host of other interesting sounding ingredients that keep popping up as the latest in age reversal and age prevention.

And which of these latest "cosmeceutical grade" anti aging and wrinkle creams is best? Well, it's hard to say, because there are now quite a few in competition with one another that do contain ingredients that are beneficial in different ways.

If you're looking for a fresher and brighter look, with more cell turnover, you may turn to a formula with acids such as alpha hydroxy and other fruit derived acids, or one loaded with antioxidants.

If you're looking for more of a quick fix, skin tightening formula, you may choose a formula with ingredients like copper, hyaluronic acid and DMAE, which is a substance that is found naturally in the skin of certain fish and is excellent for almost instantaneous firming and toning.

Either way you slice it, women have the best options for anti aging and wrinkle fighting in the here and now, than they ever had in the past.

The best part is, it only stands to get better, with the constant development of new anti aging products. As long as the cosmetics companies keep responding to increasing consumer demand for anti aging aids, we will have consistent upgrades in cosmeceutical offerings.

The downside? Some of it can become a bit pricey, but remember, a little usually goes a long way, so you may actually be going through the "expensive" stuff at a fraction of the speed you would go through a cheaper, lighter formula. And who can put a price on looking and feeling young? Call me vain, shallow, or narcissistic, but I'll pay the extra money, as long as I get serious results!
